Damage Survey – Estimated Repair
It is a fact of life accidents do happen. If that accident involves your boat there are a number of factors that have to be considered immediately. First and foremost inform the insurance company that an incident has occurred. Take action to ensure that further damage does not occur to machinery or electrical equipment. Contract an independent surveyor to assess the damage, identify the repairs needed, estimate the cost of those repairs and inspect the vessel on completion to confirm they have been carried out correctly. The surveyor will also give an opinion, after speaking to witnesses as to the cause of any damage.
A full report covering the areas requested by the client will be provided with covering photographs etc.
It is possible that the insurance company will appoint a surveyor of their choosing, be aware that they are working for the insurance company and not the owner. Insurance companies are known for making minimum payments wherever possible. This could involve cosmetic repairs only when a more through repair is actually required. The cost of an independent survey can thus be worthwhile. It is also possible that the insurance company will accept the independent report in full.
Aegean Yacht Surveys can negotiate on behalf of the client with the insurance company if instructed and authorised to do so.
